Course Objective

The course aims to comprehensively examine the social and economic structures of the Ottoman Empire from the late 18th century to the early 20th century, how these structures evolved over time, and how this evolution was reflected in the political, cultural and social life of the state. In this course, the economic foundations, production and trade activities, demographic structures, social classes, urban and rural life styles, social justice and economic policies of the Ottoman Empire are discussed.



Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understands the social and economic structure of the Ottoman Empire from the late 18th century to the early 20th century, the evolution of this structure over time and how this evolution is reflected in the general history of the empire.
2   Analyse the economic and social data of the period, critically evaluate historical processes and interpret various historical sources.
3   Understands the position of the Ottoman Empire in the global economy and how this position has changed over time and can use this knowledge to evaluate today's economic relations.
4   To have knowledge about the demographic structures of the Ottoman Empire and the relations between social classes and to be able to handle this information in the context of the historical development of social justice and economic policies.
5   Gains skills in historical research methods and can independently research and analytically evaluate the socio-economic history of the Ottoman Empire.
