Course Objective

The objective of the course is to explain concepts, strategies and policies related to special interest tourism. Students will also analyse the supply and development of types of tourism product that are alternatives to traditional tourism, niche markets and special interest groups.

1   Fundamental theories on tourist motivations and tourist typologies
2   Exploring the development process and common characteristics of mass tourism travel through tourism history
3   Analyse the notion of special interest and tourism activities related to special interest
4   Motivations, characteristics, activities, destinations and common characteristics of special interest and mass tourism
5   Evaluate service provision and marketing efforts regarding special interest tourism and provide marketing recommendations

2 Analysis of basic tourist needs and motives in mass tourism
3 Tourists' needs and motives not fulfilled by mass tourism - search for alternatives
4 Basic tourist typologies, motivation and needs, tourist experience, experience economy, co-creation processes, active recreation and creative tourism
5 Staging, performance and authenticity in tourism
6 Analysis of the scope of special interest tourism, special interest / mass tourism comparisons
