Course Objective

In this course, seismic hazard assessment in frame of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering principles is aimed. In this manner, topics such as deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (theory and application) are given in addition to fundamental concepts with respect to fault types, fault geometry and seismic hazard types.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to define fundamental concepts about Seismic Hazard Assessment.
2   Be able to learn deterministic seismic hazard assessment steps in frame of the geotechnical earthquake engineering principles.
3   Be able to learn probabilistic seismic hazard assessment steps in frame of the geotechnical earthquake engineering principles.
4   Be able to perform deterministic seismic hazard analysis for a certain region/city taking into account geotechnical earthquake engineering principles.
5   Be able to perform probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for a certain region/city taking into account geotechnical earthquake engineering principles.
6   Be able to interpret the results of deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard analyses for a certain region/city in frame of the geotechnical earthquake engineering principles.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Theoretical lessons are made together with some application problems and research papers for subjects related with seismic hazard assessment. Homeworks related with seismic hazard assessment in frame of the geotechnical earthquake engineering principles is given to each student. The results of analyses are discussed in frame of the Turkish Seismic Code for Buildings (2018) and other seismic specifications that are commonly used in the world.
