Course Objective

It has been estimated that some 80% of the data used for environmental, business and policy oriented decision making is geographical in nature. These data require a structured approach to their management if the maximum benefit is to be derived from their analysis. This course aims to give you a solid introduction to the issues concerning the management of spatial information, taking the view that contemporary GIS is a specialised branch of mainstream IT.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The students should have the ability to Design appropriate database structures for GIS analysis
2   Appreciate International standards for spatial data description and interchange
3   Manipulate data within and between internal and external databases
4   Establish protocols for data management
