Course Objective

To supply the students who are interested and/or educated in marine and environmental sciences with the most updated information and knowledge on the trace metals and related abiotic and biotic porcesses in aquatic systems. The course explaines fundementals concepts; vital importance of some trace metals for phytoplankton such as Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu especially biochemical and ecological mechanisms, scientific interest and research activities on the role of some trace metals ( as micronutrient or toxic substance) in marine primary productivity, the pathways of biological process of these metals interlinked with each other and with particulate, colloidal and dissolved organic matters, speciation, bioavailability and toxicity of trace metals and mutual relation between microorganisms, trace metals and organic matters both from the productivity and ecotoxicological perspectives both in open ocean and coastal waters.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To study fundamental concepts and vital importance of trace metals in aquatic environment
2   To introduce students to thetrace metals and related biotic-abiotic processes in aquatic ecosystem,
3   To introduce students to phytoplankton ecology and the vital importance of some trace metals for them,
4   To evaluate the bioavailability, toxicity and speciation of the trace metals
5   To gain experience in data analysis and presentation of results.
