Course Objective

Blasting agents have been using in rock fragmentation as being the most effective and economic method since the discovery of explosives by Alfred Nobel in the 18th century. Since then, there have been too many researches done on this subject to improve the efficiency of blasting agents. The aim of the course is introducing technology of civil explosives, evaluate and design mine blasting.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Should know the importance of drilling and blasting in mining activities.
2   Able to recognize of explosives technology
3   Able to describe ignition components, parameters of the application
4   Able to correlate between rock fragmentation mechanism and explosives
5   Able to identify phases of blasting design.
6   Able to correlate between particle size as a result of blasting and ongoing production activities.
7   Able to create mine blasting project

2 The theory of Detonation, explosives technology
3 Properties of explosive materials
4 The mechanism of explosives and rock fragmentation, transfer to explosive energy of the rock
5 Ignition components, connection types
6 Main blast design parameters
7 Determination of burden
8 Determination of specific charge
9 The effect of uncontrolled parameters
10 Estimate of the heap size distribution
11 The effect of heap particle-size distribution excavating and loading
12 Controlled Blasting techniques
13 Evaluate of relation with the environmental impacts of blasting and blasting design
14 Example blasting design and presentation of design project
