Course Objective

This course aims to explore the historical origins and evolution of management over time. The course aims to establish a more accessible and accurate connection between the concepts related to business management. To accomplish this, the course will cover (i) management and organization in prehistory and antiquity, (ii) management in the works of philosophers, famous politicians, and commanders, and (iii) the development of management thought in businesses between the First and Fourth Industrial Revolution. Additionally, the course aims to enhance students' management knowledge and skills by providing information and examples on the essential functions of management and current issues in today's business landscape.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Acquire knowledge of management and organization development from ancient times to the present.
2   2. Develop the ability to assess how management and organization are handled in world-renowned political, philosophical, and literary works.
3   3. Gain knowledge of the Industrial Revolution and the Management Movement, which led to the emergence of management as a science.
4   4. Recognize the teachings and representatives of Classical, Neo-Classical, Modern, and Post-Modern Organization Theory, and distinguish between these schools.
5   5. Learn to comprehend and interpret metaphors that view organizations as machines and biological organisms.
6   6. Develop the ability to understand and design structures and processes of organizations operating in different environments and with various technologies.

1 Pre-Industrialization Period: Management in ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome.
2 Pre-Industrialization Period: Management thought in the Middle Ages, including feudalism, artisan guilds, Roman Catholic Church, Protestant Reformation, and Machiavelli.
3 Management in the Industrial Revolution and the Age of Scientific Management.
4 Classical School: Scientific Management Approach.
5 Classical School: Management Process Approach.
6 Classical School: Bureaucracy Approach.
7 Neo-Classical School: School of Human Relations and Hawthorne Studies.
8 Neo-Classical School: Organizational Research and the Views of Thinkers of the Period.
9 Modern School: Systems Approach.
10 Modern School: Contingency Approach (Organizational Structure-Environment Research).
11 Modern School: Contingency Approach (Organizational Structure-Technology Research).
12 Post-Modern School: Total Quality Management, Benchmarking.
13 Post-Modern School: Outsourcing, Core-Competence, Learning Organizations.
