Course Objective

To explain the basic concepts of production/operations management and the evaluation of tools and methods used for managing the processes that converts inputs to products and services in the most effective way, with the lowest costs and the highest quality level.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To recognize the basic concepts of production/operations management.
2   To analyze the production and service systems and the strategies implemented in these systems.
3   To interpret the management decisions in the production/operations function.
4   To recognize both the qualitative and quantitative methods and tools used in management of production and service processes.
5   To solve the problems encountered in production processes.

1 Introduction and Course Description
2 The concept of production/operations, the concept of production/operations management, the historical developments of production/operations management, the recent developments in production/operations management, the differences between production systems and service systems and the strategies applied to these systems, production/operations strategy and competitiveness.
3 Classification of production systems, product / service design, product design process.
4 Break-even analysis.
5 The concepts of productivity management, rate of productivity, efficiency, affordability, rentability, efficacy and productivity calculations in service businesses.
6 Workplace layout, workplace layout types, workplace layout according to process, workplace layout according to product, fixed positioned workplace layout, cellular workplace layout.
7 Trial and error approach in workplace layout according to process, determination of machine layout set-up with assignment problems.
8 Assembly line balancing.
9 Selection of place of incorporation, the factors affecting the place of incorporation, place of incorporation problem types, weighted scoring method, the center of gravity method.
10 Transport model, the north-west corner method, WAM method, to test the goodness with Modi method.
11 Process analysis, method study, work measurement, time measurement.
12 Ergonomics
13 Supply chain management, the overall structure of supply chain, components of supply chain management, supplier selection, distribution resource planning.
