Course Objective

This course aims at providing introductory information on current theories of phonology, and enabling students to use phonological analysis software.

1 Introduction, introducing and discussing the syllabus, Vocal organs
2 Distinctive features of vowels and consonants and their transcription
3 Phonetic and phonemic (narrow and wide) transcription, writing phonological rules, phonological alternations
4 Phonological alternations, epenthesis, restrictions
5 Using Praat, acoustic properties of vowels (Praat exercise)
6 Acoustic properties of consonants
7 Suprasegmental phonemes
8 Mid-term exam
9 Distinctive feature geometry
10 Syllable structure
11 Syllable features
12 Phonological theories: Generative phonology, Optimality theory

Assessment Criteria

1. Learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3 will be evaluated via the questions asked in the mid-term and final exams.
2. Learning outcome 4 will be evaluated via laboratory work.

Absence from classes will not be considered as an excuse for late submission of the homework assignments/projects and failure in class presentations.
