Course Objective

Course Objective: This course aims at providing students with the foundations and basic notions of phonetics and phonology, with the knowledge about how speech sounds are produced and categorised, in which phonetic and phonological processes do the sounds appear and what kinds of variations these processes cause, and which rule patterns underlie these variations.

1   define the basic concepts of phonetics and phonology
2   distinguish the phonetic symbols for speech sounds
3   categorise the speech sounds
4   explain how the speech sounds are produced
5   how sounds are related to each other and which processes have effect on these sounds
6   analyse various samples from the sound systems of different languages

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The students will also be assessed with regard to participation and overall attitude during lectures. The assesment will be graded via Lecture Activity Assesment sections in the VISA and FINAL exams.

Assessment Criteria

1. Learning outcomes 1, 4 ,5 and 6 will be evaluated via the questions asked in the mid-term and final exams.
2. Learning outcome 2 and 3 will be evaluated via the assignment.

1. 70% class attendance is obligatory.
2. Absence from classes will not be considered as an excuse for late submission of the homework assignments/projects.
3. Cheating and plagiarism attempts in assignments and exams will be evaluated with a 0 (zero) grade.
