Course Objective

In the concept of this course, it is expected from the students to have information on the biotechnology and its application area, importance and place of enzyme technology in biotechnology, general view on biotechnological methods, fermentation technology, biological systems in biotechnology (bacteria, yeasts, molds, protozoa and their biotechnological importances), metabolism in microorganisms, catabolic and anabolic reactions, microbial growths and biomass formation kinetics, continuous and batch cultures, bioreactors and their types, biotechnological enzyme production, amino acid productions, antibiotic production, organic acid production, biotransformations and environmental biotechnology.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   explain the application areas of biotechnology and biotechnology and the basic methods used in biotechnology
2   discuss the place and importance of enzyme technology in biotechnology
3   explain the biotechnological importance of organisms used in biotechnology and explain, discuss and solve problems about microbial growth and bioproduct formation kinetics, batch-continuous cultures
4   express and compare bioreactors and their types with fermentation technology and examine their application areas
5   explain biotechnological primary and secondary metabolite production, discuss and generate ideas about biotransformations and environmental biotechnology
