Course Objective

This course aims at providing an introduction to the field of linguistics and drawing attention to the relation of linguistics to other disciplines of research, and providing information about the functions of language and sub-disciplines of linguistics

1 What is Linguistics Definition and Methodological Principles of Linguistics. Foundation adn Developmemnt of Linguistics. Post-Saussurean Linguistics.
2 Synchronic (Descriptive) and Diachronic (Histroical) Linguistics. General and Specific Linguistics. Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.
3 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Literature, Psychology, Logic, Philosophy, Anthropology, Geography
4 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research: Physiology, Biophysics, Cognition, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Processing.
5 Relation between linguistics and other disciplines of research:Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, Physics, Cybernetics, Technology
6 Language and Thought, Language and the Mind. The semiological content of language.
7 Language and Society, Linguistic Societies, Language Varieties.
8 Midterm
9 Branches of Linguistics: Phonetics: Definition, areas of application and sub-branches Phonology: Definition, areas of application and sub- branches
