Course Objective

To gain the ability to understand the basic concepts of chemistry, symbols, units, calculations, chemical properties of matter, chemical bonds, chemical reactions and chemical reaction mechanisms and solution chemistry as well as applying them to the solution of chemical problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defines the structure and properties of matter and atom
2   Write and name the formula of a compound using the periodic table
3   Explain the structure of acids, bases, salts and oxides
4   Understands the solution and its properties, defines the concepts of mole, molarity and normality
5   Understands chemical reactions and solves problems related to reactions
6   To be able to understand the applications of chemistry in daily life, to interpret new chemical events and their properties as a result of technological developments

1 Classification of matter, physical and chemical properties of matter, measurement, use of numbers and dimensional analysis
2 Atomic theory, structure of the atom, atomic number, mass number, isotopes, molecules and ions, chemical compounds and naming of compounds
3 Chemical reactions and stoichiometry, atomic mass, mole concept and determination of chemical formulas
4 Energy in chemical reactions, introduction to thermodynamics and reaction enthalpy
5 Electron structure of atoms, atomic orbitals and electron distribution
6 Periodic table, periodic properties of elements, ionization energy and electron affinity
7 Periodic table, periodic properties of elements, ionization energy and electron affinity
8 MIDTERM EXAM
9 Chemical bonding; Lewis theory, ionic and covalent bonds, electronegativity, resonance concept and bond energy
10 Chemical bonding; molecular geometry, valence bond theory and molecular orbital theory
11 Gases; gas pressure, gas laws, ideal gas equation and gas mixtures
12 Intermolecular forces, liquids and solids
13 Physical properties of solutions, solution types and concentration units
14 Chemical kinetics; reaction rate, reaction mechanism and catalysis
15 Chemical balance; aqueous solution reactions, acids and bases, the concept of pH, buffer solutions and titration
16 FINAL EXAM
