General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology Graduate Program was established in 2015. The aim of the program is bringing up sociologists who is informed historically and systematically main sociological concepts and problems, being able to make use of these information in order to account for human, society and world problems, explain clearly their sociological solutions concerning these problems to the others in writing and verbally.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology program has five faculty members from different disciplines and two research assistants. 2 year graduate program of Department of Sociology consists 4 semesters. The language of the courses that offered in the program is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Could define fundamental concepts and terms in his/her mastery area of sociology, could know the history and recent developments in that field.
2   Could know the prior and recent approaches and perspectives in his/her mastery area of sociology, could discuss the strong and weak aspects of that field.
3   Could know the basic assumptions of fundamental theoretical approaches and perspectives in his/her mastery area of sociology, could compare these theories, could express the similarities and differences, contributions and limitations.
4   Could have knowledge of the applications to real world in his/her mastery area of sociology. Could be aware of the limitations of this field and could contribute to the solutions of these limitations using various methods.
5   Could follow developments in his/her mastery area of sociology in the world and in Turkey, could be able to have knowledge of research in literature. Could express his/her knowledge of sociology by an effective expression and language skills.
6   Could have knowledge about qualitative and quantitative research methods, could have reach skills and experiences of research design configuration, analysis method selection, data collection, data interpretation, statistical reporting, and discussion.
7   Could follow and examine the scientific activities such as scientific articles, oral/poster presentations and could participate to the scientific activities by himself/herself or as a part of scientific team.
8   Could realize the similar and different aspects between him and different groups on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnical group, national identity, language, religion, sexual orientation, disability and socioeconomic status, could criticize his own opinions and could be flexible.
9   Could have awareness and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and social events and problems and could provide explanations and solutions based on his/her knowledge of sociology.
10   Could know the ethical principles and values of sociology and the ones specific to his/her mastery area of sociology, could work in accordance with these principles. Could realize ethical dilemmas and could take his/her decisions on the basis of the relevant ethical principles.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates may be employed by various public institutions such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Family and Social Policies; at Local Administrations, non-governmental organizations, private educational institutions and industrial establishments. Moreover, they may proceed with their careers in the academic field (Doctoral level) and go on with their scientific researches under the umbrella of the university.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In the curriculum of Department of Sociology Graduate Program, courses corresponding to a total of 120 ECTS are presented to students. Students have to take elective courses which are equivalent to 120 ECTS and to acquire at least 2.50 GPA (grade points average) on a 4.00 scale. Moreover, students must successfully complete a thesis project.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
