General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Medicine Biophysics Department was founded in accordance to the 4565-20003 numbered approval of the Board of Higher Education dated October 22, 1990, and the Faculty board letter dated November 23, 1990. Prof. Dr. Murat Özgören has been the head of the department since November 20, 2005. The biophysics department continues to function in building number 5.
The scientific discipline in which biological events and systems, which make up cell, tissue and organs in living beings, are processed and explained within the framework of the laws of physics may be defined as Biophysics. The two basic disciplines of biology and physics intersect in fields of research on both micro-and macro-molecular level. As the intersection of these fields may primarily receive coverage under the roof of Biophysics they also constitute subfields of research.
In Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Medicine Biophysics Department carries out an educational and scientific research methodology known as Brain Biophysics which brings together various clinical fields such as neurosciences, psychiatry and neurology, and disciplines such as experimental and clinical psychology, anatomy, radiology, nuclear medicine, engineering, physics, mathematics, linguistics and statistics in the investigation of brain functions in terms of cognitive biophysics and applied brain dynamics.
The department, carries out its research on basis of this multidisciplinary approach in subjects such as memory, plasticity, brain asymmetry (laterality), brain oxygenation, thermal conductivity, and electrophysiological research fields such as (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory) evoked brain potentials, event related potentials, event related oscillations in various consciousness states (sleep, awakeness, anesthesia) in healthy individuals. Research is also conducted in patients with psychiatric and neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, parkinsons desease, cerebral-vascular diseases, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Projects carried out and are currently being carried out in our laboratory involve dichotic listening, brain asymmetry, face recognition, neurophysiological imaging, neurofeedback, neuropsychological tests, psychovigilance (PVT), biophysics of the brain-body, and sports psychology.
In addition to this our department implements research in fields which contribute to the establishment of the units Innovative Brain Responsiveness Research Coordination and the Dokuz Eylül University Sleep and Consciousness States Technology and Research Center (UBAM).
Our faculty members, Prof. Dr. Murat Özgören director of UBAM and Doç. Dr. Adile Öniz, the general secretary, are both founders of the center. In addition to this Prof. Dr. Murat Özgören serves as vice rector of Dokuz Eylül University, and Doç. Dr. Adile Öniz is the executive vice president of Dokuz Eylül University Biomedical Metrology and Calibration Application and Research Center.

Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

The department offers masters program education since 2007. The Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Medicine Biophysics Department carries out an educational and scientific research methodology known as Brain Biophysics, which brings together various clinical fields such as neurosciences, psychiatry and neurology, and disciplines such as experimental and clinical psychology, anatomy, radiology, nuclear medicine, engineering, physics, mathematics, linguistics and statistics in the investigation of brain functions in terms of cognitive biophysics and applied brain dynamics. The aim of the program is to obtain knowledge about subjects such as the principles of biophysics, biophysics of the cell, neurological and psychiatric disorders, neurophysiology, and neuroanatomy, radiological imaging methods and EU projects and international projects.
Upon completing the program students are expected to be able to obtain and process EEG data, apply neuropsychological tests, write and present reports in native and foreign language.
Masters graduates are innovative and creative and consider themselves to be competitive in analytic thinking, working as part of a group, planning and implementing projects.
