General Description

History

Department of Pediatric Nursing Nursing was established with the approval of Senate within the body of HSI on September 26, 1994. The DOCTORAL program of Pediatric Nursing started education with the approval of the Board of Higher Education in 2005. The program lasts for totally 4 years; 2 years for courses and 2 years for thesis. The language of the program is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

A successful student who has completed at least one semester at any postgraduate programme may be admitted to an institute at the University by lateral transfer. Requirements for admission of students by lateral transfer are determined by the Board of Directors of the Institute.Students who have matriculated after they have successfully passed the postgraduate entrance exam may be exempted from the courses they have already taken in other institutes upon the proposal of the relevant department and the approval of the Board of Directors of the Institute. However, the total credits of the exempted courses cannot exceed 1/3 of the credits required to finish the relevant programme.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student is required to receive courses that correspond to a total of 90ECTS, in which 12 ECTS are supposed to be related with the profession, and complete the thesis study that corresponds to 150 ECTS in order to graduate from the program. A total of 120 ECTS credits should be completed. The average grade should be at least 2.50 / 4.00 for each course.

Profile of the Programme

Department of Pediatric Nursing started the doctoral program in 2005. This program aims to enable the student to conduct original studies in order to contribute to the recruitment of Pediatric Nursing, generate new ideas, methods and applications and ground the applications on evidence-based studies. The program involves the compulsory courses of the institution, compulsory courses of the department and elective courses in different fields of Pediatric Nursing. Students are also allowed to select courses from other departments and institutions or universities.

1   To research, comprehend, plan and adapt specific subjects and be capable of implementing them using certain superior mental processes, including creative and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making with the purpose of creating new scientific methods that innovate in pediatrics or apply known methods to new fields of study.
2   to act as a leader in the transmission of scientific and technological developments and innovative approaches in nursing care to colleagues and nursing students, and to contribute to the process of becoming a knowledge-based society.
3   To participate in interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral cooperation for the development and implementation of health policies, and to be capable of functional interaction in problem solving using strategic decision making.
4   To lead the provision of culturally competent nursing care in institutions or units of service.
5   To combine nursing theories with personal knowledge and experience, and to contribute to the advancement of individual, institutional and social nursing philosophy.
6   To act as a leader in the setting of standards for nursing education, and individual, institutional and social care and management.
7   To publish at least one scientific article on pediatric nursing for journals with national or international referees and expand the field knowledge.
8   To build effective communication that reflects individual competence when defending opinions before a group of experts.
9   To offer solutions to the social, scientific and ethical issues in pediatrics and support the development of these values.

The graduates of this program could work in the field of Pediatric Nursing in the public and private sector as specialist nurses and academicians.

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Every student must register to total of 30 ECTS. 150 out of 240 ECTS must be thesis studies. Throughout PhD study, each student must collect 90 ECTS (including 12 ECTS of Specialty Area course) in 3 semesters. During course period of PhD study, every student should enroll to at least 20 ECTS of common elective courses (such as, Research culture, research methods and transferrable skills) and at least 20 ECTS more from discipline based and laboratory skill courses. Also, student may enroll to a common elective, discipline based and laboratory skill courses in a different institute or university to complete 20 ECTS. Every student must register to Thesis related reseach topic I in first semester and Thesis related reseach topic II in second semester. Furthermore, during course period , each student should attend to a Ethics course or training.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

In the courses, the students are assessed through their success in 1 midterm and 1 final examination, as well as homeworks and projects. They are required to score at least 75 in order to be successful in the course.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of courses, (at least 78 ECTS), field study (12 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP
