General Description

History

The department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance has offered Master of Science Degree since 1998, and has offered the doctorate degree.

The Master's Degree in Psychological Counseling and Guidance is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled all programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Successful students who have completed at least one semester in another institute within the university or in the graduate program of another higher education institution can apply for lateral transfer on the announced dates, if the quota is determined by the Board of Directors. Admission conditions through lateral transfer are determined by the institute board of directors.
Exemption requests from the courses of the program that the student has taken and succeeded while enrolled in a graduate program of another department/university are evaluated by the Institute Administrative Board, taking the opinion of the Department Head in accordance with the provisions of the Dokuz Eylul University Exemption and Adaptation Directive.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations


PhD program; It consists of at least seven courses, not less than 21 local credits, taken from the course groups specified in the curriculum, thesis proposal, specialization course, proficiency exam, seminar and thesis work.
The student workload for a semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload required to complete the doctoral program is 240 ECTS.
In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations and project work can be used in the performance evaluation of the student during the semester. In order for the student to be considered successful in the relevant course, this grade must be at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). Seminar, thesis work and specialization courses are evaluated as successful / unsuccessful.

Profile of the Programme

Objectives of the department are to provide the graduates with the specialized and advanced gains as the following: the understanding, assessment, helping, referring of the individual to the appropriate mental health institutes; using the statistics , psychological tests and non-test techniques, individual, group and family counseling and helping techniques; the theoretical and applicational knowledge related to development, learning and behavioral disorders and counseling.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Diagnosing of student having deficiencies and superiority and referring them for support and treatment.
2   Students should use Turkish and English in statistics and computer using in scientific research
3   Diagnosing and counseling of adults and children who have developmental, interrelational problems, needs, behavioral and personality disorders.
4   Planning of group and individual counseling sessions and using communication and counseling skills (verbal and nonverbal) in application.
5   Planning and applying the educational, vocational, personal and social guidance and psychological counseling services.
6   Planning and applying psychological counseling and guidance and consultation studies for families, school staff and adults
7   The application, assessment, evaluation, report writing of psychological tests and non-test techniques for the purpose of understanding people.
8   Using of the developmental fields, theories, periods and the problems of adjustment, the social and philosophical base of behavior, the concept and principles of teaching, learning and management in the application of guidance and counseling.
9   The usage of the principles of vocational ethics and the theories of psychological counseling and guidance in the planning of psychological guidance services.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading


In order for students to take the final exams, they must have attended 70% of the theoretical courses and 80% of the practice/laboratories.At least one midterm exam is given for a course in each semester. At the beginning of the semester, the Institute Directorate and the students are informed about how the midterm, mid-term studies and final exams will be reflected in the success grade of that course, and the content of the course for the whole semester, the course book and related literature, the mid-term exam and application dates on a weekly basis. According to the principles included in the course introduction information given to the students and the institute at the beginning of the semester by the faculty member, taking into account the end-of-term course grade, midterm exams, final exam, and/or the end-of-semester project work evaluation, as well as the course work and attendance at the end of the semester. is appreciated.Make-up exams are opened in graduate courses. With the decision of the Graduate School Administrative Board, students can repeat the courses they have been successful in in order to increase their grade point average.In order to be considered successful in a course, students must have received at least a CB grade from that course as a semester-end grade.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of compulsory and elective courses (77 ECTS), a field study (4 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (156 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and defensed the doctorate thesis successfully.
