General Description

History

Institute of Social Sciences started its activities in 1982, by aiming the continuous development, the goal of universal level is to provide education and training post-graduate level. As the second level of the postgraduate study, Doctorate in Private Law is offered by Instition of Social Sciences. The number of applicants and the quota for masters study is relatively hig. Thoug the quota for acceptance to the doctorate program is relatively limited because being able to accept more qualified candidates after the masters degree.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The objectives of this program are to have expert lawyers who internalize universal legal principles, have an expert level of evaluating and analyzing legal disputes. At the end of this research-based program, the recent national and international developments will be evaluated. The experience that defines and solves the legal conflicts and disputes is one of the main objectives. The capacity of critical thinking and illuminating the society about legal issues will be improved. The other fundamental objective is to have competent lawyers who can do research, give presentations and share his/her thoughts on international level.
During the lecture process of this program, lectures which are about the basic fields of Private Law as Obligation Law, Commercial Law, Labour Law, and Civil Law. In every mid-term, it is submitted that doubled amount of the lectures which had to chosen by students. Thus students could choose the lessons which they want to be lectured. After this process, comes another process, which is named as doctorate competence. Duration of these process changes 6 mounts up to 1 year. At the end of this process, student has an exam, which is named as competence exam. If students pass that exam, here comes thesis process.

1   Deepening and promoting undergraduate knowledge to an expert-level and performing, planning, applying and concluding a research of original legal issue individually with academic prestige.
2   Reaching original definitions that bring scientific innovation to the field of Private Law.
3   Realizing the relation between Private Law and other disciplines such as public law, economics, politics, international relations and reaching original conclusions by using knowledge that needs profession for analyzing, synthesizing and interpreting new and complicated opinions.
4   Approaching new information about Private Law systematically and having an ability of utilizing high-level research methods.
5   Bringing an innovation to science, improving a new scientific method or applying an ordinary, known method to a different area and searching an original subject.
6   Making a critical analysis, synthesis or interpretation of a complicated issue concerning Private Law.
7   By publishing an original study that brings innovation and creates a new scientific method or adapt an ordinary, known method to the field of law, making an academic contribution.
8   By publishing at least one scientific article in national or international refereed journal, expanding the horizon of Private law.
9   Taking the lead when the conflicts of Private Law or interdisciplinary problems appear.
10   By using high-level mental process like creative and critical thinking, solving a problem or making a decision, creating new ideas and methods concerning Private Law.
11   Analyzing the norms of Private Law that motive social relations critically. For this objective, leading the actions when required.
12   Finding new solutions for social, scientific and ethic problems of Private Law and supporting the progress of the values.
13   Having a communication skill for defending her/his original opinions concerning Public Law in a professional community.
14   In an academical or professional context, introducing technological, social and cultural progress and making a contribution to have a knowledge-based society.
15   In a field of Private Law, having a communication through written, oral and visual matters in at least one advanced-level foreign language (European Language Portfolio General Level: C1).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examination regulations, assessment and grading are regulated in Art. 22 of The Graduate Education Rules of Practice from the DEU Institute of Social Sciences. Generally there are two exams in a mid-term: a mid-term exam and a final exam. In addition to these two exam, there can be an other work which is named as mid-term work or it is discussed that different court decisions. If there is a mid-term work, weight of the score of final exam cannot be under %40, but if there isnt any mid-term work, weight of the score of final exam cannot be under %60. Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member / s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes is subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (83 ECTS), a field study (4 ECTS), Seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
