General Description

History

The Department of Medical Biochemistry was founded in 1982 under the umbrella of the Medical School, with the legal approval from the High Council of Education in Ankara. Eighteen faculty members competent in different areas of medical biochemistry take part in this department. MSc training in Medical Biochemistry has been started in the academic year 1985-1986. The training programme lasts two years including two semesters of courses and two semesters of thesis work. The programme language is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS), and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS) credits. İn total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

The department of (Medical) Biochemisty has started its graduate training in the year 1985-1986.. The objectives of this programme are to educate individuals having a good maitrise of basic and up-dated theoretical and laboratory information in basic and medical biochemistry and closely related fields, to train students in basic laboratory skills as well as those skills necessary for their thesis, to teach them how to analyse, make a synthesis, and evaluate, to train them in data searching and in scientific methodology and in effective scientific communication. Students can choose electives from other departments as well as from other universities.

3   Possess the expertise in research systematics with a minimum level of supervision:Form a hypothesis,Plan an experiment, Carry-out an experiment,Analyse, manage and Interpret data, be aware of the ethical considerations in the scientific process
4   Data-base searching and management. Effectuate a data-base search and use effectively the information retrieved, Possess the expertise in information technology,Use effectively End-Note and related programmes
5   Communication.Transfer information in academic and professional environments. Possess written, oral, and electronic communication skills.Work effectively within a group.
6   Basic teaching skills. Contribute to the student practicals in education

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In this programme, three courses are mandatory for each semester. All other courses are elective. The student should have acquired 60 course ECTS credits and 60 thesis work ECTS credits in two years. The programme details are presented in the Diploma supplement.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Assessment of courses take place using two mid-term and one final examination, written assignments, and projects. The minimum requirement for success is 75/100 points.
