General Description

History

Architecture education in İzmir began in Ege Private School of Architecture and Engineering in Buca in 1963. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture was founded in the 3rd of July in 1992. However, the establishment of the faculty and the launch of the education in Alsancak have begun in 1971 with 12 undergraduate students of Architecture. The department was affiliated to different faculties since its establishment. The milestones of the faculty from the past until today are summarized as; "Ege University Engineering Sciences Faculty Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971), Ege University Fine Arts Faculty (1975), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (1982), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture (1992)". After the 23-years of education in the building in Alsancak, the faculty building moved to Kaynaklar Campus in Buca in the 2004-2005 academic year.

There are Architectural Design Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, Structural Construction Design Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, Restoration Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, at Dokuz Eylul University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Branch of Architecture.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Architecture Architectural Design Master of Science Programs offer the students to deepen the knowledge and skills that they gained in the undergraduate school; to obtain the awareness of the interactive relationship of the architectural theory and praxis; and to develop intellectuality in an original and significant contribution to the field.

For admission to the Architectural Design Master Of Science Program, the students are required to have a Bachelors Degree in Architecture.

Architectural Design Master of Science Programs recruits students in the specific dates twice a year according to the academic calendar (January-February and August-September).

Facilities Of The Department:

The staff and students of the Architectural Design Master of Science Program uses the classrooms, studios, laboratories and technical facilities of Dokuz Eylül University Department of Architecture. Besides, there is a classroom in the building which is used only by Architectural Design Program.

1   Design original research by using the disciplinary knowledge of architecture in architectural research with an advanced level of understanding
2   Critically conduct a research based on theoretical-factual knowledge and cognitive-practical skills at the level of expertise; developing new knowledge, methods and critical perspectives in the field
3   Develop holistic approaches in research and design with interdisciplinary / multidisciplinary / transdisciplinary approaches
4   Design original research by offering conceptual-theoretical insights into architecture / by conducting design research at different scales based on current-new practices / by using innovative design methods and technologies
5   Develop new solutions and strategic approaches to current developments, studies, research, local-regional-global problems in the field of architecture; comprehend current design approaches and architectural design practices in relation to environment, city, society, culture; evaluate critically and dialectically with the awareness of social and ethical responsibilities
6   Integrate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the specialization field with cognitive and practical skills in professional practice
7   Use different architectural research approaches, methods and techniques of the field in research
8   Work independently in national and international environments, to take responsibility, to lead, to manage learning and career; share knowledge, skills and experiences related to professional and social life; understand, criticize and lead changes in social relations and norms
9   Use the information produced in architectural researches and current developments in the field in a methodological, analytical and systematic manner in line with social, cultural, scientific, ethical dimensions and scientific research, publication ethics and academic writing rules; publish in national-international environments
10   Communicate orally and in writing by using academic language and a foreign language; use information and communication technologies, techniques and tools related to the field of architecture at an advanced level

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Architecture graduates who have master's degree can work in a wide range of areas that their profession gives them opportunity to perform. Some of them work as academics and start to work as a research assistant at universities.They are also employed at different parts of the public sector.In addition, employment of graduate students can be as freelance office architects, project designers, construction site architects and designers who work on presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.).

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities).

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
