General Description

History

The Department of International Relations, which was founded in 1992 within the Faculty of Business, was renamed Political Science and International Relations in 2024. The aim of the department is to educate students who can approach global political developments and the dynamics of international relations from an academic perspective and efficiently practice their ability of analytical and critical thinking. Students also learn such skills as gathering and analysing data, and expressing their ideas clearly and effectively. There are four subdepartments: Political History, EU Politics and International Relations, Law of Nations, and EU Law. The medium of instruction is English.

Qualification Awarded

Graduates of the (UOLP-Suny Albany) Joint Programme will be awarded with International Relations, Bachelor's Degree from both universities.

High school diploma. Placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

General frame for recognition of prior learning is regulated in the relevant articles of Dokuz Eylul University Educational and Examinational Regulation of Pre-Graduate and Undergraduate Degree. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the Joint Programme, Students have to successfully complete all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) of 2.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS. Graduation from the SUNY Albany University requires the achievement of 3.00/4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.).

Profile of the Programme

Students enrolled in the Joint Programme will study the first two years in Dokuz Eylül University, and the last two years in the SUNY Albany University. In the initial two years of their study, the students are expected to take the main courses of the Political Science and International Relations programme of Dokuz Eylül University. In their third and fourth years, students take courses from the SUNY Albany University leading to the opportunity of receiving two bachelor degrees in a four years study period. The Joint Programme is aimed at giving the prospective students the opportunity of studying abroad. The instruction of language is English in both programmes.
Students will develop critical analytical skills through a wide variety of courses that allow them to explain, compare, and generalize about political phenomena in a broad range of countries, employing the key methodologies of the discipline. Courses are designed to inform, provoke, and inspire students to think critically about significant historical, political, economic and social issues in contemporary world politics.The objective is fostering excellence in education by integrating the benefits of studying in two prestigious universities; Dokuz Eylül University and the SUNY Albany University within a joint programme. Our time call for new generation of leaders, educated about the dynamics of international relations and proficient in foreign languages as well as international affairs.

Key Learning Outcomes

1	To have a basic knowledge of the disciplines that political science and international relations is related to (economics, law, sociology, history etc.).
2	To be able to inform authorities and institutions in the field of political science and international relations; to be able to transfer ideas and proposals verbally and in writing to experts and nonexperts, either in Turkish or in English.
3	To be able to speak and write English at a medium level (Common European Framework of Reference Level B 2) of fluency efficiently.
4	To be able to use computer skills at an advanced level.
5	To take the responsibility as a group team member and as an individual to solve multidimensional problems.
6	To assess critically the acquired knowledge and skills, and be able to improve them.
7	To have ethical and social values and apply them in the stages throughout the processes of collecting, interpreting, disseminating and implementing data related to political science and international relations.
8	To be able to examine, interpret data and assess concepts and ideas with the scientific methods in the field of political science and international relations.
9	To acquire basic conceptual and theoretical knowledge, and be able to use theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of political science and international relations.
10	To be able to interpret history of international relations and to be able to use the acquired knowledge critically.
11	To be able to recognize regional and global issues/problems in different subfields of international relations and to be able to develop solutions based on research and scientific evidence.
12	To be able to use the acquired knowledge in the area of Turkish political structure and foreign policy critically.
13	To be able to use diplomatic communication skills with authorities and institutions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates have various opportunities for employment in the public and private sector. The joint diploma program offers prospective students the potential of spatially diversifying their career options. In the private sector, our department has graduates who work in finance, sales and marketing, and human resources departments of banks, independent auditing firms and companies with foreign trade activities; as well as in telecommunications and media. We also have graduates in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pursuing their careers as diplomats. Our graduates also work in various state institutions and non-govenmental organizations as EU specialists or foreign trade specialists. Those who have preferred an academic career, are working on their masters or PhD degrees in universities at home and abroad. Some of them are working as research assistants and instructors particularly in the departments of International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in Educational and Examinational Regulations of the Dokuz Eylül University and Faculty of Business.
The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is DD. Other grades; Incomplete (I) accorded to students who, although otherwise successful, have failed to complete the required assignments for a course. A student receiving an incomplete grade for any course must make up for the deficiencies within 30 days after submitting the grades to Registrars Office. Otherwise, the grade I automatically becomes FF. Satisfactory (S) accorded to students who are successful in non-credit courses. Unsatisfactory (U) accorded to students who are unsuccessful in non-credit courses. Exempt ( E) is given to students who transfer to the program from another, after the equivanlence of courses they have taken previously is recommended by the dean/director and approved by the faculty board. This grade may provide an exemption for a particular course at the program.
No Attendance (NA) is given upon failure to attend classes or complete practical or applied components of a course. (NA) configures in CGPA as FF.

Graduation Requirements

The Bachelors Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS. In order to graduate from the SUNY Albany University, students have to fulfill the 3.00/4.00 (CGPA).
