General Description

History

Department of Graphic was founded in 1983 among the ranges of Ege University Campus land; the department was emigrated to İnciraltı Campus of Dokuz Eylül University in 1994. Department of Graphic had been increased its workshop space and upgraded its education technology in 2002. Department of Graphic, which has an elite staff of veteran artists and exclusive scholars, chooses its pupils among the cream of the crop candidates to under graduate programs of Faculty of Fine Arts. The department has been carrying on its education for almost 12 years. Department of Graphic is home to renown annually and interuniversitary national visual communication event Young Brain Storming among various workshops, exhibitions and seminars.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

An undergraduate transfer to the faculty is applied within the meritorious regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 27561 dated 24.4.2010 about: transfers between associate degree programs and undergraduate programs, double major, lateral branch and interinstitutional credit transfer making.
In the vertical transfers; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 24676 dated 19.2.2002 about: undergraduate education attendance of graduates of vocational high school and open-university associate degree program is applied.
Within the transfer of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 20112 dated 18.3.1989 about getting associate diploma or adaptation of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools is applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
1- Training is performed based on course passing system in faculty.
2- Failed courses belong to an academic year are firstly enrolled next academic year.
3- Absolute assessment system is applied in faculty.
4- Grade point avarage (GPA); it is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying course credits with marks to total credit in relevant term.
5- General Grade point avarage (GGPA); it covers the whole courses and education period so far and is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying all course credits with marks to total credit.
6- Only enrolled courses are taken into consideration in GPA and GGPA calculation, the courses which can not be attend are omitted. The last mark is considered for repeated courses. In average calculation, two decimal after comma is used.
7- The last mark gained for repeated courses is passing mark. Whether have been taking course addition to maximum load not exceedingly two courses or not and its conditions are determined by Faculy Administrative Board.
8- The student must complete 4 years of study acquiring 240 (ECTS )credits. At least 60 ECTS of 240 ECTS credits must have been electives courses. This degree is awarded to students who have successfuly completed all courses in the curriculum, 60 days of internship, Graduation project and have a minimum CGPA of 50/100 and no failing grades.

Profile of the Programme

Graphic Department continuous its education program under Graphic Design Branch. Graphic Design education curriculum duration is four years, and its first two semesters include basic visual communication seminars. Its third and fourth semesters include universally indispensible design courses such as graphic design and typography with base courses that are necessary for specialization on the further levels of graphic and visual communication education. Fallowing semesters, students can chose between elective courses according to their specialization goals on industrial and graphic arts areas. At the end of the eighth semester the Graphic design curriculum completes with two requisite internship terms and a graduation exhibition with thesis.
Graphic Design curriculum has a wide range of theoretical seminars in edition to practical workshop studies to develop the students intellectual skills. All works and project of the students are reviewed by the department staff in an open house exhibition at the end of every semester. Seminars of undergraduate graphic programs purpose are to construct the theoretical foundations surrounded with reinforcements of practical knowledge. Students can train themselves according to the context of the class and they can get the professionals skills to use devices and techniques such as computers, digital photography in a creative and artistic way. Annually placement of elective courses that start in year 3 is like thus: III. and IV. Semester 25%, V. and VI. semesters 66%, VII. And VIII. semesters 33%.All elective courses of the Graphic Dep. Undergraduate Programs average to all courses are 42%.
Student Exchange and Student Mobility for Placement Programmes are beenig held in the frame of LLP/Erasmus.
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Fine Arts Graphic Department s Academic Staff consists of; one professor, three assistant professor who is also the head of the department, three research assistants included one finished degree of proficiency in art, one specialist, three part time three full time six lecturers. Within the new demands there is a disponibility of one research assistant and one assistant professor position.
Six ateliers including two printing techniques atelier and four ateliers used for lectures, one graduate classroom, one computer labs (19 Mac and 18 PC total 36) with the ability of reaching internet and design programs, one animation studio which has been traditionally equipped that allows nine student to work at the same time has been constituted in the department. Internet access is available in the whole department with the help of Wi-Fi connection under the control of the system called eduroam or cable connection.
Every educational year an event called Young Brain Storming has been arranging since the academic year of 2001. This event happens in three main parts like; seminars, workshop ateliers that guided with field experts and well known designers and also a competition which carries the same name of the whole event. Each student in the department has a chance of exhibiting the school works in art galleries and faculty exhibition area after years of education and gaining expertise. Graphic Department also has a group called; Graphic Community/Society that enables students works individually or as a group outside of university courses.
In addition to national events there is an organization called International Student Meeting has been carrying out by the Faculty since 2002.
From the time of the academic year of 2006-2007, with the aid of Erasmus/ LLP program our students has a chance of continuing part of their education in international universities across the Europe such as; Italy, Slovenia, England, Austria, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Croatia, Finland, Romania, Greece. Counting backward from the present department increased the amount of the agreements and within these agreements, each year at least two undergraduate students experienc

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 50. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi. Graphic Design curriculum has a wide range of theoretical seminars in edition to practical workshop studies to develop the students intellectual skills. All works and projects of the students are graded by the lecturer, in some periods of semester. Beside that, projects are reviewed by the department staff in an open house exhibition at the end of every semester. Evaluation of the end term Juror is 20% of the final Assesment.

Graduation Requirements

A student is required to have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 50/100 and no failing grades, to complete at least 240 ECTS credits in total and 320 hours of practical study/internship.
