Course Objective

The purposes of this course are to explain the importance of reading and writing skills for individuals with disabilities, to define components of reading and writing skills, to develop assessment tools in order to evaluate reading and writing skills, to discuss teaching approaches used for reading and writing, and to explain scientifically approved interventions used for developing reading and writing skills of individuals with disabilities

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the importance of development of reading and writing skills for individuals with disabilities. 2   Describe the link between language skills, emergent literacy skills, and reading writing skills. 3   Plan interventions to develop reading and writing skills by considering the needs of an individual with special need.

Week Subject Description 1 The importance of reading and writing skills for individuals with special needs. The current situation with respect to reading and writing performance of students with special needs. 2 The effects of language and emergent literacy skills on developing reading and writing skills. 3 Phonological awareness, definition, importance, and development assessing phonological awareness and scientifically approved interventions. 4 Phonics and decoding, definition, importance, and development assessing phonics and decoding skills and scientifically approved interventions. 5 Reading fluency, definition, importance, and development assessing reading fluency skills and scientifically approved interventions. 6 Vocabulary knowledge, definition, importance, and development assessing vocabulary knowledge and scientifically approved interventions. 7 Reading comprehension, definition, importance, and development assessing reading comprehension and scientifically approved interventions. 8 Midterm exam 9 The importance of developing strategic reading for students with special needs 10 Components of writing skills development and importance. 11 Pre-writing skills and practices used for developing pre-writing skills. 12 Assessing form of writing and scientifically based approaches to improve form of writing 13 Assessing form of writing and scientifically based approaches to improve form of writing 14 Teaching strategic writing to improve expression 15 Teaching strategic writing to improve expression 16 Final Exam
