Course Objective

Modernity, Violence and Politics critically examines th violent conflict: including war, genocide, state violence and terrorism; and conflict resolution. This degree explores the origins and the consequences of violence, and considers how conflict is memorialised. Drawing on philosophy, history and cultural politics you will learn about the war on terror, humanitarian intervention, the cold war and the two world wars.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Critically investigates forms of violent conflict - most notably war, genocide, state violence and terrorism - as well as conflict resolution in the modern world.
2   Explore the origins of violence and the consequences for those involved directly.
3   Study how conflict is represented, memorialised and imagined, after the conflict has ended
4   Study critical traditions, exploring the historical, cultural and philosophical origins of the west and critically assessing the promises of enlightenment.
5   Have the ability to ask questions on philosophical and theoretical issues, and produce answers through modern and critical understanding.
6   Deliver elaborate and well articulated presentations of research findings to demonstrate a proficiency in presentation skills.

Assessment Criteria

1- Students will foster a sustained and critical reflection on social violence, history and humanity.
2- Students will explore of of social orders through time and their practices and moral economies of permissible and impermissible violence.
3- Students will examine on different conceptions of violence will be explored such as symbolic, structural, and everyday violence, along with their intersections with the many ambivalent meanings of civilization.
4- Students will use library and internet resources academically

1. Attending at least 70% of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Students are expected to read the assigned material prior to class and to participate in class discussions.
4. Students will make presentations on topics distributed by the instructor.
