Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to enhance understanding of historical development and political ideas shaping European integration as well as major political developments and institutional arrangements. The reading material covers major political ideas and processes such as feudalism and industrial and French revolutions and political initiatives especially after the end of Second World War shaping European integration process such as Single Market, Economic and Monetary Union, common agricultural policy and enlargement.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Examine the historical background of the EU in order to understand political and economical underpinnings of European integration process.
2   Demonstrate conceptual understanding of the gradual evolution of European political cooperation to explain the current level of European integration.
3   Identify the policy areas of the EU to evaluate the competencies of the Union.
4   Recognize the EU's decision-making mechanisms to comprehend the functioning of the Union.
5   Develop skills to engage in discussions with other students and the lecturer.
