Course Objective

In this class which discusses the relationship between artworks and the space they are exhibited in; the process of the spreading of art in public spaces is examined, together with an explanation of the concept of "public sphere", by means of a discussion of gallery spaces as white cubes and the meaning and the necessity of institutionalisations such as museums.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Definition of public sphere and discussions on it.
2   The function of galleries and museums as art institutions in contemporary art.
3   Exhibition of works in the public sphere and discussion on the subject via samples.
4   Art processes following Dada and Marcel Duchamp.
5   Performance, Happening, Land Art, Body Art, Feminist Art, Earth Art, Arte Povera, Action, Relationship of art objects/sculptures with the environment and the society.
6   Biennials as international activities that utilize the city and public areas.

1 Discussion on public sphere and its definition.
2 The function of galleries and museums as art institutions in contemporary art.
3 Exhibition of works in public sphere and discussions on samples of artworks.
4 Art processes following Dada and Marcel Duchamp.
5 Performance, Happening, Land Art, Body Art, Feminist Art, Earth Art, Arte Povera, Action, Relationship of art objects/sculptures with the environment and the society.
6 Biennials as international activities that utilize the city and public areas.

8 Discussions on artists such as Esra Ersen, Gülsün Karamustafa, Cevdet Erek, ODA Project (An artist collective comprising Özge Açıkkol, Güneş Savaş and Seçil Yersel) and their works.
9 Student works utilizing chosen public areas
10 Mutual conversations with students, discussing the ideas produced and suggestions put forth.
11 Mutual conversations with students, discussing the ideas produced and suggestions put forth.
12 Evaluation of visual notes and documents prepared by the students such as drawings, collages, photographs, texts and found images.
13 Evaluation of whether the students are showing consistent progress with regard to quality and quantity during the application process of the works.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

To start a sustainable dialog with the students through mutual conversations about their "works", and identifying the references to contemporary art by making reading/watching suggestions in parallel to the works produced.
