Course Objective

The aims of this course:
1. To provide students with basic knowledge in the field of disaster and trauma psychology.
2. To inform students about the psychosocial effects of disaster and trauma on individuals and society.
3. Adressing clinical interview elements to assess post-traumatic stress and other accompanying issues
4. To understand how acute psychological interventions occur in disasters.
5. To gain a theoretical and practical understanding of psychological interventions for trauma.
6. Reviewing the literature and writing a report on a specific intervention in the field of trauma and disaster psychology

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will acquire basic knowledge of disaster and trauma psychology.
2   Students will be able to recognize and classify trauma types.
3   Students will be able to evaluate the negative effects of disaster and trauma on individuals and society.
4   Students will be able to define the concepts of post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth.
5   Students will learn how psychological interventions for the acute period in disasters are applied.
6   Students will examine different theoretical approaches to psychological interventions for trauma.
7   Students will be able to conduct a review study with a chosen topic in the field of disaster and trauma.

Assessment Criteria

There will be open and closed ended questions including knowledge, comprehension, analysis, interpretation and synthesis in the exams, one midterm and one final. Students will be asked to review a topic and report it.
