Course Objective

This class is intended for beginner and intermediate triathletes interested in learning about Sprint & Olympic Distance Triathlon.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will demonstrate appropriate safety practices for all three criteria of a triathlon. Swim/Bike/Run
2   Students will improve and/or maintain their level of cardiovascular fitness throughout the semester.
3   Students will develop the skills to monitor various energy zones during physical activity.
4   Students will improve and/or maintain muscle/joint strength, endurance, and agility.
5   Students will improve/maintain muscle/joint flexibility.

Course Contents

1 In pool swim instruction & and understanding proper use of & reasons for swim tools
2 Understanding the importance & proper execution of swim drills
3 Skills to write & execute useful & meaningful swim workouts
4 In pool practice for Open Water sighting, turns, panic management
5 Simple bike maintenance training changing a flat, putting the chain back on, checking skewers, adjusting derailleur
6 Bike handling skills & bike safety
7 Bike workout progressions to increase riding fitness, power & speed
8 MidTerm Exam
9 Importance & use of Dynamic Warm-up & run drills
10 Running skills cadence, lean, stride length Running shoe selection
11 Run Strategy - Run/Walk (implementing run/walk into training & racing), LSD, intervals
12 Pre-, in- & Post-Race Day & Workout hydration & nutrition guidance
