Course Objective

In order to describe the science gemology and its sub-brances (10 parts). To examine in large scale the mineral diamond in terms of mineralogy, gemology, and mining. To grade the diamonds gemologically. To explain synthetic productions of HP-HT and CVD diamonds, and to be distinguished them from natural ones. To explain color enhancements for the diamonds, and to be distinguished them from the natural ones. To indicate facet cutting for the diamonds with the main lines. To clasify and grade the pearls scientifically. To indicate the diamond and the pearl trade with the main lines. To present a report on the diamonds and pearls by collecting data obtaining from scientific researches.

Course Contents

1 The historical development of the diamond cutting. Physical and optical properties of diamonds. The 4C s of diamond (color, clarity, cut and carat weight).
2 Colour classification of polished diamonds. Effects of fluorescence on diamond. How to assess diamond according to the normal range of colors. Treated and fancy colour diamonds.
3 Determining how to evaluate clarity inclusions and defects. Evaluating polished diamonds according to clarity. How do inclusions affect appearance and stability
4 Evaluating polished diamonds according to cut and weight. Differences between karat and carat. Crown, pavilion and total depth analysis. Evaluation of finishing details. Estimating, determining table, crown and pavilion angles.

Brilliant cut diamonds suppliers in Türkiye and around the world. How the market works. Diamond bourse professional and official organizations. Marketing of brilliant diamonds.
11 Identification of brilliant diamond. Imitations of diamonds. Synthetic diamonds artificial coloration. Distinguishing synthetic diamonds. How to separate faulted and filled diamonds. Distinguishing synthetic moissanite and the other imitations.
12 Scientific properties and formation of the pearl.
13 Pearl grading.
14 General review about diamond and pearl subjects.
