Course Objective

The aim of this course is to gain competencies related to the basic physical chemistry in the jewelry industry to students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to explain concepts of basic physical chemistry and optics to explain.
2   Be able to detect chemical bonds and cage systems of minerals.
3   Be able to recognize acids, bases and solvents used for coating by electrolysis techniques in jewelery.
4   Be able to compare types of atomic models and coloration relations.
5   Be able to describe the mechanisms of natural and artificial coloring gemstones.

1 Matters and their features, examination of the concepts of Atom, Electron, Proton, Neutron, Nuclear Atom, isotope and their applications
2 Chemical Bonding, Ionic Bonding, Covalent Bonding, Lewis Structures, Theory and applications of the Octet
3 Elements and Compounds, Nomenclature of Inorganic Compounds, Mole Concept and Applications
4 Solutions, Concentration Units (weight percent, mole fraction, molarity, molality, normality) and applications
5 Acids and Bases, pH concept, chemical equations, the oxidation numbers Oxidation and Reduction Reactions and Applications
6 Definition and properties of Electrochemistry, Electrolysis effect, metallic (gold and silver) coating and applications
7 Definition and properties of Electrochemistry, Electrolysis effect, metallic (gold and silver) coating and applications
8 Mid-term exam
9 Types of optical physics and descriptions, and properties of light, reflection and refraction (Snell's Law), solar radiation and the electromagnetic spectrum
10 Coloration principles of transparent and opaque minerals
11 Luminescence and types, Atomic models, and coloration relations
12 Color, coloration and color vision events
13 Examination of the mechanisms of natural colouration in gemstones
14 Examination of the mechanisms of natural colouration in gemstones
15 Artificial coloring techniques applied to gemstones
