Course Objective

In general, to teach eight sub-branch of gemmology. In particular, to identify of semiprecious gemstones (primarily mined from Türkiye), to teach the cutting and polishing methods and devices of them, and also, to make extensive researches on these objectives.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to describe the eight sub-branch of gemmology.
2   Be able to scientific identify the semiprecious gemstones.
3   Be able to define the Türkiye's gemstone potential in large scale.
4   Be able to cut and polished the gemstones in various techniques.
5   be able to present a report on gemstones obtaining with scientific investigations

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Explaining routine of the investigating gemstones, expressing gemstone terminology, delivering the consumable requirement list which necessary for lapidary.
2 Instruction properties of the opaque gemstones. Teaching to cut semi-precious stones as plate-form by sawing.
3 General formation types of the geologic rock varieties, classification of the igneous-metamorphic-sedimentary rocks and their properties. Teaching shining and polishing gemstones.

5 Investigation of the opaque gemstones. Cutting gemstones in the free-form as cabochon and teaching polishing.

All students must attend to the conducted courses with at least 70%. During the course and in the exams, all kind of making a copy are evaluated comprising a discipline crime.
