Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the fundamental laws of chemistry and importance and applications of chemistry in daily life.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to write the rate expression of a reaction.
2   To be able to specify the factors that affect reaction rate.
3   To be able to write the chemical equilibrium expression for a reaction.
4   To be able to explain the factors that affect the equilibrium according to Le Chatelier's principle
5   To be able to define terms of acid, base, buffer solution and indicator.
6   To be able to calculate pH's of strong / weak acid and strong / weak base solutions.
7   To be able to specify the laws of thermodynamics.
8   To be able to calculate the potential of an electrochemical cell reaction.

Course Contents

1 Chemical kinetics, writing the expression of reaction rate, measurement of the reaction rate, determination of the order of one-step reactions.

3 Reaction mechanisms, factors that affect reaction rate.
4 Chemical equilibrium, equilibrium constants, the equilibrium constants in terms of concentrations and pressures, Le Chatelier's principle and the factors that affect the chemical equilibrium.
5 Ionic equilibrium, solubility, and the factors affecting solubility, solubility product constant and precipitation, precipitation condition.
6 Ionic equilibrium, solubility, and the factors affecting solubility, solubility product constant and precipitation, precipitation condition.
7 Properties of acids and bases, acid-base definitions, ionization of water, pH, and pH measurement, indicators, weak acid-base equilibriums.
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Salts, determination of the pH of acidic and basic salts, the buffer solution and calculation of the pH of a buffer solution

13 Third law of thermodynamics, the absolute entropy, free energy and equilibrium
14 Electrochemistry, electrochemical cells and applications of the Nernst equation.
