Course Objective

The aim of this course is to allow the students to rotate in different laboratories related with the MSc programme in molecular medicine in a multidisciplinary perpective, to learn about the different research methods and techniques used in research laboratory and to acquire practical knowledge in this area. Basic methods learned are as follows: principles of weighing, homogenization techniques, solution preparation, measurement of pH, centrifugation techniques, spectrophotometry, cell culture, gel electrophoresis (agarose, SDS), westernblotting, genomic DNA and total RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, conventional and real-time PCR, spectrofluorometry, microbiological methods.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know about the different laboratories which may be involved in molecular medicine
2   To learn about the different subjects and areas of application in these laboratories
3   To understand the basic principles of techniques used in these laboratories
4   To compare different methods in terms of principles and applications
5   To be able to apply these methods in ones own research field
6   To integrate the information acquired and prepare an laboratory notebook

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be organised as rotations in different labs. There will be short presentations from the instructors on the different methods. Each course will be evaluated by pre- and post- test. The students will prepare a laboratory notebook involving the information learned and processed.
