Course Objective

The aim is to make the students practise on the traditional weaving, such as çarpana, carpet, rug and other plain weaving, and hand printing

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be able to define the production of çarpanas, carpets, rugs and other plain weaving used as daily materials in our traditional culture, and hand printing,
2   be able to acquaint themselves with the tecniques used in the traditional production starting with traditional weaving ( çarpana, carpet, rug and other plain weaving ) and hand printing,
3   be able to practise the weaving techniques used in the traditional weaving, çarpanas, carpets, rugs and other plain weaving
4   be able to practise the tecniques used in the traditional hand printing
5   be able to present the practices done in the content of the course

1 Representing the content of the Turkish Handcrafts course for the spring academic term
2 Giving information on Çarpana weaving and making preparations for the materials
3 Pattern work, transferring the patterns through cards and weaving process
4 Giving information on the Traditional Kerchief Printing and pattern choosing
5 Forming the Linol Printing models and transferring the patterns
6 Paint preparation, composition preparation on the cloth and printing process
7 Cloth printing process
8 Going on the cloth printing process
9 Introduction of the techniques of carpet and plain weaving, preparations for the materials and warps
10 Applying carpet weaving techniques
11 Applying Zili weaving techniques
12 Applying light rug weaving techniques
13 Applying Sumak weaving tecniques

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course is taught both in theory and in practice. The course subjects will be taught in theory, references related to the subject will be given, and the practices of each course will be done by the students. Furthermore, after each course the students will be asked to write down the studies they have done in a file, just as keeping a diary.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

A midterm and a final exam will be given related to the subjects given both theoretically and practically. The students pass grade will be appointed by the grades of the midterm, the practice file to be submitted at the end of the term and the final exam.

Assessment Criteria

The midterm, the practice file and the final exam will be evaluated out of 100; the 25% of the midterm, the 25% of the practice file and the 50% of the final exam will determine the pass grade. The evaluation of the two exam questions will be given to the students.

Course Policies and Rules

The compulsory attendance is 80%. Before the end of the term, in the last 15 days, students will be able to learn their attendance. Students having absenteeism over 80% won't be accepted to the final exam. At the end of each course, the next lesson subject is given to the students as study and research subject. So, students come to the next lesson ready. Apart from midterm and final exams, students who are on sick leave will be considered absent. Students who don't take the midterm or/and the final exams without an excuse won't be given them again by any means.
