Course Objective

The aim is to teach the students which materials are used to make traditional carpets and plain weaving (Kirkit weaving ), by which technique and on which loom they are made; and have them weave by using carpet, rug and plain weaving techniques, and also have them gain the skill to solve the possible problems in designing, theory and practice triangle from designing to production.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   classify the traditional carpets and plain weaving according to weaving techniques,
2   develop original designs within the scope of a chosen subject,
3   operate a loom,
4   programme the preparation progress before weaving,
5   apply the traditional carpet and plain weaving techniques,
6   convert his designs into product,
7   represent the products effectively.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Fixing the raw materials used for carpets, rugs and plain weavings; and spinning and painting process and the subject to design
2 Beginning to make copies for designs, and kinds of looms used for weaving, their introduction and slide projection
3 Going on making copies and giving information about preparations for pre-weaving process
4 Introduction of the techniques for webs, çiti, edge laps, rug knitting and knots; evaluating the copies; and fixing the colour variations for the certain copy
5 Explaining the technique for button-holed rug weaving, and colouring the designs
6 Explaining the technique for light rug weaving; lurnishing with the warp; preparing the looms for weaving
7 Explaining the Zili weaving technique and carrying out the preparations for weaving
8 Explaining Sumak weaving technique, and starting out weaving

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course is taught both in theory and in practice. Students are supposed to design a weaving in accordance with a given subject. The designs are woven by using carpet, rug and other plain weaving techniques.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

This course is mainly workshop course. We aim to teach the students the techniques used for weaving, and give them theoretical knowledge concerning the equipment and looms. We will also evaluate the students attendance.

Assessment Criteria

Students attendance will be evaluated out of 100. Also, their designs and weaving works will be evaluated out of 100 at the end of the term. The 30% of the attendance and the 70% project evaluation will determine the pass grade.

Course Policies and Rules

The compulsory attendance is 80%.
Before the end of the term, in the last 15 days, students will be able to learn their attendance on the lists or on the web. Students having absenteeism over 80% won t be evaluated by the jury.
Students who are on sick leave will be considered absent.
Students who don t attend the jury evaluation without an excuse won t be accepted for the evaluation by any means.
