Course Objective

The course aims to study the major intellectual currents and figures in the Ottoman Empire since the late nineteenth century, and in Early Republican Türkiye. Various intellectual currents that emerged in the late Ottoman Empire (Ottomanism, Turkism, positivism, Islamism, liberalism etc.), intellectual breaks and continuities with the past in Republican Türkiye, recurrent and controversial themes, and intellectual transfers from the West will be examined.

Assessment Criteria

The students are expected to
1. Explain the basic concepts, assumptions and ideas of political thinkers discussed in class in a clear and consistent manner.
2. Compare and contrast different currents and thinkers.
3. Describe the social and political context in which a thinker lived and how this is reflected in his theory.
4. Present and discuss learning material in an elaborate and well organized manner.
5. Submit a well-designed research paper.

Course Policies
1. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
2. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
3. Students must read the learning material and participate in the discussions.
4. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise they will not be accepted.
