Course Objective

To teach unique properties, production process, usage areas, current trends and privileged position of denim fabrics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define construction and technical properties of denim fabrics
2   To be able to define significance of denim in textile sector and design.
3   To be able to define the process of denim production and indigo dyeing
4   To be able to define the methods used for worn-out look of denim and visual effects, usage areas and non-apparel denim applications
5   To be able to analyse denim effects in the light of acquired knowledge and current trends and offer new design alterrnatives

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What is Denim Denim culture in the world and Türkiye. Its historical background and development process.
2 Main denim producers in Türkiye. Significant position of Türkiye in denim production and trade in the world.
3 Structural properties of denim fabrics and its usage areas. Privileged position of denim in Textile and Fashion design.
4 Fiber and yarn types used in denim fabrics. Global denim projects.
5 Denim fabric production process and indigo dyeing. Other dyestuffs used in denim production, ecological (environmentally-friendly) production methods
6 Washing methods, wet and dry finishings to gain worn-out look and visual effects to denim fabrics.
7 Washing methods, wet and dry finishings to gain worn-out look and visual effects to denim fabrics.
8 Quality controls for denim products and denim standarts.
9 Assesment and discussion of current denim trends, production and finishing techniques and developments. Consequently, preparation of an investigation report.
10 Non-apparel denim applications; evaluation of relevant products and designers.
11 Use of Denim in artistic and creative studies and artists/designers in this field.
12 Mid-term exam
13 Valorisation of denim wastes, recycling and upcycling possibilities.
14 Brain storming for unusual use of denim in potential areas and discussion of new ideas in the light of acquired knowledge.
