Course Objective

The aim of the course is to examine the relationship between narrative and cinema and to make the basic narrative genres in cinema comprehensible within an aesthetic, historical, political, economic and cultural context.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1- To provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of narrative
2   2-To gain comprehensive knowledge about the types of film narratives and their positions in the history of cinema
3   3- To learn about the ideological and social functions of film narratives
4   4- To be able to learn how to analyze these films structurally through the analysis in the course

6 Peter Wollen, Godard and the Counter Cinema (seven great sins, seven great virtues)
7 Godard, counter-cinema through the film "Chinese Girl"
8 Midterm Exam
9 Comparison of counter-cinema and classical narrative through Godard "Weekend"
10 Classical / modernist narrative discussions on two selected films
11 Postmodernism and Postmodernist Narrative in Cinema
12 Tarantino as a postmodern example (analyzing the movie "Inglorious Basterds")
13 Conclusion: Relations between Narrative and Ideology in Cinema
14 Conclusion: on semester wrap-up and final exam
