Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of basic concepts relevant to understanding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of addiction and to teach students the models of intervention strategies used in family counseling

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Promote critical thinking and use of current models of addictions and their treatment
2   2. Review scientific understanding regarding the etiology of addictions including genetic, psychological ,environmental and social/cultural factors
3   3. Present clinical assessment tools commonly used and understand their role in planning treatment and intervention
4   4. Consider the influences of psycho-social and cultural effects in relation to addictions
5   5. Discuss the ethical considerations related to research and the treatment of addictions
