Course Objective

Providing the students, who will be professional opera singers, get the basic knowledge on music theory.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student knows the all concepts related to tonalities and circle of fifths.
2   The student can solve the chords with inverted shapes and figures.
3   The student can explane the all non-harmonic notes.
4   The student can define the harmonic relationships in tonalities in terms of form on the basic level.
5   She/he has the basic knowledge about the instruments and grups.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The concept of "sound", its formation and properties.
2 Explanation of the concept of "music".
3 Introduction to music writing. The staff, clefs, names of notes (syllable and letter system) note durations, rest duration
4 Repetition of the topics in the 3rd week. Accidental marks.
5 "Dot" in Music. Explanation of extension dot and Staccato and examining their differences.
6 "Tie" in Music. Explanation of tie and legato and examining their differences.
7 Preparing assigments
8 Repetition of the subject of note durations. Rhythm, tempo, mesure and beat concepts.
9 Repetition of the topics in the 8th week.
10 Interval concept.
11 Intervals in Music. Examination of intervals in octav.
12 Intervals Examination of intervals according to their types, usage and resonance.
13 Intervals Rewiev of dual intervals (diatonic, chromatic, inharmonic)
14 Repeat signs. Tempo and dynamics terms.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Teaching the concepts of music theory to the students by explanation, and making them practice the topics that intended for implementation during the lessons.
