Course Objective

The studies about visual perception show that we don t sense the world and the images as they are but we form them. We are not only a passive camera, even an instantaneous photo that we choose plays a role in our active interpretation of the world. In this lesson it is aimed to re-shape all that we see starting from our daily life to visual images in visual communication design and artworks.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To know how writing and drawing which are the basics of design concept are created with computer aided graphic design programmes.
2   To control the digital data that is forming an image.
3   To know how a font is crated and being used creatively in design context.
4   To differenciate and realize the elements that highlight a font and a vectoral drawing.
5   To get to know Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop programmes and comprehend to their structural and basic features.
6   To be able to use the acquired knowledge in all scopes of visual communication design.

1 DIGITAL IMAGES: About bitmap images and vector graphics; WORKSPACE OF ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR: Workspace basics, Tools, Files and templates, Rulers, grids, and guides, Setting preferences, Recovery, undo, and automation
2 IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND SAVING: Importing files, Saving artwork, Creating Adobe PDF files; DRAWING: Drawing basics, Drawing simple lines and shapes, Drawing with the Pencil tool
3 DRAWING (CONTINUATION): Drawing with the Pen tool, Editing paths, Tracing artwork, Symbols, Symbolism tools and symbol sets
4 COLOR: About color, Selecting colors, Using and creating swatches, Managing swatches; PAINTING: Painting with fills and strokes
5 PAINTING (CONTINUATION): Live Paint groups, Brushes, Transparency and blending modes

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This lecture is given both theoretically and practically.

In the first theoretical chapter the subject of the week is given by the lecturer, holding to the main source of course material* by applying model applications with the help of delineascope. Meantime students take notes, follow the course from their own computers and attend model practices.

In the second practical chapter students are supposed to practice the application project given by the lecturer, by using the theoretical information, menu commands and methods of application learned in the first chapter. During the application students are supported by the lecturer. If the project is not completed within the course time, the student is supposed to complete it until next week.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In the project technique which is subject to review, it is supposed to submit the CD of all application projects prepared during the term, at the last week of the term.

In the final exam technique, during the exam several design images are shown by the computer and students are asked to explain and write down the methods of creation that design, the tools of the design program, menu commands and run phases. Student can make application on computer during the exam.

Assessment Criteria

PROJECT: Number of practice projects that are submitted, artistic quality (content, composition, principles of design etc), ability of applying the technique, care in presentation of the project, efficiency in using time, consulting the instructor during application phase and submitting the project on time, are the criteria for grading the project.

FINAL: The criteria for evaluation of achievement will be; the answers of the questions must be brief and concise, the tools and menu commands that are used must be specified , the written definition of the process must be good enough to intruct how to reach the expected visual result when applied by another person.

1-It is mandatory to participate 80% of the lessons
2-Students who are late for the lecture by ten minutes or more than ten minutes cannot attend the lecture and will be considered absent
3-The projects that are not submitted on the specified time will not be evaluated
