Course Objective

The main purpose of the course is to learn the periodic classifications, which are defined by the structural differences on the typefaces and the periodic developments and changes in the development process of the typefaces. Understanding the effect of typefaces belonging to periodic classifications on design. Selecting a font suitable for the content and purpose of the design. Things to pay attention in text editing.
The subjects such as family and structural features of the typeface, suitability of the character to the class and design are among the aims of the course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

2   To be able to choose the appropriate font for the design and to convey the message in a striking way
3   To be able to hierarchical arrangement in design
4   To be able to structure the page in the most accurate and creative way to make a design different

6   To be able to solve and finalize the given projects creatively in line with the information and has acquired, and to prepare the completed projects for presentation in an accurate and unexpected way

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Meeting Aim of the course Expectations of the course 1st week
2 The structural features that make up the font, the structures that enable writing and measure the letter are emphasized. In addition, the structural features of Humanist, Oldstyle and Transitional typefaces, which are among the periodic classifications, are explained and a comparison project is given to reinforce the knowledge. 2nd week Project 1: Select and compare one typeface from humanist, oldstyle, transitional period
3 1st Project work is examined and evaluated. The formation and structural features of Modern and Slab Serif typefaces are emphasized and a project is given to consolidate the knowledge. 3rd week Project 2: Choose one each of modern and slab serif typefaces and list their structural properties.
4 2nd Project work is examined and evaluated. The formation, structural features and 4 subgroups of Sans Serif typefaces are emphasized and a project is given to reinforce the knowledge. 4th week Project 3: Select one typeface from each of the 4 subgroups of sans serif typefaces and list their structural properties.
5 3rd Project work is reviewed and evaluated. Typeface Designers and Foundries; how to create and market a typeface, what is Type Specimen Explanation with examples. A project is given to consolidate knowledge. 5th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. Collecting, classifying and balancing information about the 9 fonts to be used in the booklet. Sketches are made for page design.
6 Evaluation of the information collected about the 9 fonts to be used in the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet. Page design work is given to design the places where the collected information will be located in the booklet. 6th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. Sketches are made for page design to determine where the collected information will be located in the booklet.
7 The page design sketches made for the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet are looked at, evaluated and new ones are worked on. 7th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. Sketches are made for page design to determine where the collected information will be located in the booklet.
8 The page design sketches made for the Fourth Project "Type Specimen" booklet are examined, their applicability for all typefaces is discussed, and 3 sketches are selected for application. 8th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. The selected sketches are created as sample pages in the Indesign program.
9 For the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet, the most appropriate 1 of the 3 sample pages prepared in the Indesign program is selected. How to apply the selected page design to other fonts in the entire booklet is explained through examples. 9th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. The selected page design is applied to the 9 fonts that must be included in the booklet, based on what is explained. The important thing in this part is to use the correct font size for each typeface. In addition, minor changes in the page layout can be controlled according to each font.
10 In the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet, each font is checked separately and any changes that need to be made are discussed. 10th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. The selected page design is applied to the 9 fonts that must be included in the booklet, based on what is explained. 12 In the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet, each font is checked separately and any final changes that need to be made are discussed. 12th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. After the final changes that need to be made are completed, the final version of the work is printed and put into booklet format.
13 After the final changes to the page design of the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet are completed, the final critique is given on the booklet output. 13th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. The last critical changes made to the output are completed and a new output is prepared.
14 After the final changes to the page design of the 4th Project "Type Specimen" booklet are completed, the final project evaluation is made based on the booklet output. 14th week Project 4: Type Specimen booklet. Project evaluation.
