Course Objective

Enable students to learn, internalize, sight sing (play at first sight) and interpret orchestral works with their historical backgrounds; while having the students practice these works, develop their knowledge, skills and musicianship, thus increase their professional performance as opera and symphony orchestra members. In addition, for students who intend to have academic career, this course is designed to have them acquire the proficiency to teach it in future as well.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Play alone numerous fragments chosen from orchestral repertoire of advanced level.
2   2. Pay attention to tempi, dynamics, rhythmic features, key signatures, character, articulation, sonic quality and intonation of any chosen fragment.
3   3. Comprehend technical and musical features of a fragment.
4   4. Play at first sight the most prominent orchestral fragments that a student never came across before this course.
5   5. Perform chosen orchestral fragments with other instruments
6   6. Adjust to other instruments, articulations, sound quality and intonation that a student plays together with.
7   7. Associate a chosen work with its historical and stylistic features.
8   8. While performing together, pay attention to properties such as listening others, playing simultaneously and sonority.
9   9. Execute an extensive literature search on the chosen orchestral works and present the collected information verbally and in writing.

Symphony and opera Works of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern periods that require advanced performance and artistic level.
Published cello passages from orchestral works.
Written materials, video and audio recordings of practiced works.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures
Technical, intonation, sonic, musical, historical and stylistic interpretation of orchestral works; individual and collective application via performance method and the tutti and particularly solo presentation of these works.
