Course Objective

By underlining the importance of strategic management concept in lodging industry, it is aimed for students to internalize each stage of the strategic management process -the basic concepts, strategic analysis methods, strategy formation and application in particular- by taking the requirements of strategic management discipline into account and by providing the necessary skills that can be transferred from theoretical knowledge into practice, students are expected to develop and apply strategies both at the corporate level and business unit in terms of the frameworks and methodologies useful for the managers and it is aimed to prepare postgraduate students to the working life both with case studies and interactive classroom discussions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to identify the fundamental concepts of strategic management; to differentiate the concepts of goal, strategy, tactic, policy, plan, and method; and to list the tools used in the process of strategic management.
2   To be able to grasp strategic management process, and identify steps in it based certain characteristics.
3   To be able to analyze internal and external elements of businesses, conduct SWOT analysis and form appropriate strategies.
4   To be able to compare businesses competencies and possible strategic alternatives preferred to increase market share and profitability in intensive competitive environment; and to select and implement a strategic option.
5   To be able to discuss current developments encountered in hotel businesses; and to identify appropriate strategic choices when necessary.
6   To be able to evaluate the results of strategic decisions by analyzing in the framework of critical strategic thinking and examining the impacts on business performance.

Assessment Criteria

1. The project within the framework of the given research topic should be submitted in written text around 20-40 pages. Stated project should be written with clear and comprehensive statements and should reflect strategic thinking. Students need to (i) explain each stage of the project, (ii) present it to the class members, (iii) answer the directed questions and the conducted study is needed to have an original value, it is also important for students to express how they converted the theoretical knowledge into practice.
2. Students are expected to identify main issues related the given case studies and develop solutions for the problems.

1. It is obligatory to attend at least 70% of the classes.
2. Violations of Plagiarism of any kind will result in disciplinary steps being taken.
3. Students are expected to participate actively to in-class discussions and team-works.
