Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to achieve a necessary understanding of the democratization process in Türkiye and the historical milestones of this process.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defining the concepts of democracy and republic
2   Understanding the types of concepts of republic and democracy
3   Determining the place of Turkish democracy as a definition and type
4   Revealing the differences in the emergence of the concept of democracy between the West and Türkiye
5   The emergence of political parties from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic and understanding their purposes
6   Understanding democratic infrastructure
7   Revealing the importance of elections and election systems in Türkiye and learning the stages they go through
8   Causes, common points and differences of military coups
9   Understanding that the development of democracy follows a parallel process with the development of the country
