Course Objective

Generally, to give information about quality concept of quality systems with management and production functions by defining the quality concept. Analysis of the standards in the field of maritime; understanding of the rules of environmental protection and to raise environmental awareness, understanding of the concepts in the field of maritime safety and security, to investigate national and international rules in this area and to investigate applications of these rules in different areas of the industry, Giving information about the theoretical and practical studies on these issues.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

3   3. To raise awareness of environmental protection at sea, to raise awareness on environmental legislation and practices.
4   4. Understand the global and local maritime standards
5   5. Understanding the factors of safety and security in the operational management of vessels, Being informed about current practices
6   6. Understanding of the human factor in maritime industry, develop a strategy to contribute to the formation of the culture of safety and the environment.

2 Quality, standard and ISO concepts. History.
3 Total quality management, six sigma and marine applications
4 ISO 9k and types, application areas, audit and control processes
5 ISO 14k and types. Quality management in small enterprises.
6 Maritime education standards and quality. STCW and national legislation. Turkish maritime industry applications
7 Marine environmental protection legislation, MARPOL, OPA and other applications
8 Environmental risks by types of vessel and voyage and cargo and environmental protection culture,
9 ISM Code
10 MLC, ILO, ITF
11 The concept of safety at sea, safety culture, related legislation and practices
12 Development of the concepts of environment, safety and security, developing recommendation for medium-and long-term plans and strategies.
13 Interpretation of project presentations.
14 General review

3. understanding of global and local standards in maritime will be evaluated with midterm and final exams.
