Course Objective

The sociological concepts of society and religion (Marx: "Religion as the Heart of a Heartless World", Durkheim: "Religion as Social Adhesive", Weber: Religion as Meaningful Social Action and Motivation" etc.), analyzing the relationship between religion and society, understanding the basic character of religion-state relations in Türkiye and the West, learning different models of religion and state relations applied in the world. Analyzing the historical process of religion-state relations in the Republican period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learns the definition of religion in the historical process.
2   Learns the definition of the state in sociological terms.
3   Learns religion-state relationships in the Republic period.
4   Compares all processes of religion-state relationships.
5   Analyzes the individual-religion relationship within the framework of psychological approaches.

Whether the student has knowledge about the topics covered in the course, the ability to evaluate and discuss on the topics will be evaluated by midterm and final exams. Students' ability to follow, analyze and discuss current developments will be measured by the homework they prepare.

Assessment Criteria

1. LO 1-3 will be asked in mid-term exam
2. LO 1-5 will be asked in final exam
3. LO 1-5 will be assessed with term homework or presentation

1. It is compulsory to attend 70% of the courses.
2. Presentations and homeworks prepared within the scope of the course must comply with scientific ethics and institute rules.
3. Absence from the class will not be considered as a valid excuse for late submission of homework.
