Course Objective

The aim of this course is to understand the biology of cancer, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis and their clinical view.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Capable of understanding molecular biologic properties of tumors; nature of metastasis.
2   Be able to explain cancer from molecule to cell and from cell to tissue
3   Be able to know cell adhesion molecules and their roles in cancer
4   Be able to learn role of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in cancer.
5   Be able to understand stages of metastasis and metastasis related genes.

2 Tumor Progression and genetic instability
3 Origins of Metastatic Tumor cells
4 Genetic control of metastasis (differences from tumorogenesis, tumor suppressor genes)
5 Metastatic cascade
6 Tumor Microenvironment (detection of metastatic potential and metastatic site)
7 Proteases in tumor cell invasion
8 Tumor cell motility
9 Tumor basement invasion and initiating tumor cell migration
10 Cell to cell adhesion and metastasis suppressors
11 Cell Matrix Interactions and Tumor Cell Migration
12 The role of integrins in tumor migration
13 Cell Migration
14 Methods in evaluating tumor progression and metastasis (Invasion, metastasis experiments, models, Microarrays )
15 Final exam

Assessment Criteria

Learning outcomes will be assessed with classical questions of final exams. The homework on the topic of mechanisms of metastasis of lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostat cancer will help in evaluating the learner understood the topics or not.
