Course Objective

This course is designed to instruct students in diagnostic medical mycology. Diseases, specimen collection and handling, laboratory identification of fungal diseases, antifungal agents and the mechanisms of resistance to antifungal agents for the treatment of medically important fungi will be studied.
The laboratory is designed to emphasize principles and procedures used in the isolation, cultivation, and identification of medically important fungi.
Intensive study of classification, morphology, physiology of medically important fungi and pathogenesis of fungal disease, immunity to fungal infections, antifungal agents and mechanisms of resistance to antifungal agents. Emphasis on epidemiology, pathogenicity and diagnosis.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Has a knowledge of general consepts of basic medical mycology in relation to clinical importance.
2   Examination, identification and determination the role of fungal infections, pathogenesis and fungal immunity of clinically important fungal agents.
3   Has a knowledge of the antifungal agents in the treatment of mycosis and antifungal susceptibility testing methods of some fungi
4   To learn the mechanism of action, spectrum of activity of antifungal agents against well-known groups of fungi and mechanisims of resistance to antifungal agents
5   To learn and apply general methods in basic medical mycology
6   To evaluate and discuss research articles and publications in medical mycology
