Course Objective

The course aims to build an insight about the parasites, their interactions with hosts and parasitic infections.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to define general properties and the life forms of parasites.
2   Be able to define the structural properties of parasites.
3   Be able to define the classifications of parasites.
4   Be able to define the life cycles of parasites.
5   Be able to define the pathogenesis of parasitic infections in humans.
6   Be able to define the laboratory diagnosis of parasitic infections.
7   Be able to define the prevention and therapy strategies against the parasitic infections.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to parasitology, relation between parasites and hosts, types of parasitism, pathogen effects of parasites and transmission ways
2 Classification of parasites, intestinal protozoa and amoeba
3 General properties of blood and tissue protozoa, Leishmania, Trypanasoma species and their infections
4 Toxoplasma gondii and toxoplasmosis
5 Plasmodium species and malaria
6 Intestinal protozoa participating in immun deficiency
8 General properties of helminths and nematodes, intestinal helminths
9 Tissue nematodes and their infections
10 General properties of cestodes, cyst hydatid
11 Some of the important cestodes (Taenia saginata, T. solium, H. nana, D. latum) and their diseases
12 General properties of trematodes, some of the important trematodes and their diseases
13 General properties and classification of arthropods, insects (mosquitos, phlebotomus, pediculus, flea, pulex) arachnids (scabies, tick, demodex) and their infestations
